backyard landscaping ideas

Summer has ended and fall is here! Bring on the pumpkins! Bring on the smore’s! Bring on the sweaters, the football, and more! It’s time to sit outside and enjoy the reason that so many people are flocking to Arizona. If you’re the kind that likes to entertain, but your backyard is in need of a little TLC, you can be sure that these backyard landscaping ideas are sure to beckon you outside.

Backyard Landscaping Ideas: Unique Firepits

There are few things that people stop and stare at for hours, but fire is one of them. The flickering lights and the crackling logs beckon busy homeowners to relax and forget about their to-do lists. Building a fire pit in your backyard is the perfect place to start. Even if you have only plastic chairs, your backyard instantly become inviting if you have a fire pit. Whether big or small doesn’t matter. In fact, with some many fireproofing materials out there, the design of you firepit is only limited by your imagination.

Creative Lighting

If you’re not into fire, try lights. Adding various lighting effects around your yard can create an almost magical space. Try stringing white Christmas lights in the trees, or large bulbs string lights from the house to a post in the yard. Pick up a couple of lanterns at the local store and hang them with candles inside, or make your own out of mason jars.

Pergolas

Building a pergola  is one of the coolest ways to define space in your backyard. These open-air structures provide shade during the day and a place to string lights at night. Use it as a dance floor, a picnic spot, or put a table underneath for memorable family dinners. Plant climbing vines near the base so they grow into a luscious garden or set pavers below the structure to create the perfect outdoor area.

Built-in Seating

One of the backyard landscaping essentials is seating. If you have no place to sit, well, you’re probably not hanging outside. Some people throw up their camping chairs, which can work for a while, but for a couple of bucks, you can invest in some build in seating that doesn’t wear out. Curved, cement benches that surround firepits and straight wooden sectionals are cool additions that add comfort for little cost.

Repurpose Old Logs

In the spirit of DIY try searching the internet for ideas using old logs. The ideas are endless. Hollow them out to create planters, or use branches as decoration from which to hang candles or lights. Make side tables out of them or polish them down to use as extra seating.

Small Fountains

With a strategically placed fountain, you can turn your backyard into a place of tranquility, drowning out the sounds of loud neighbors, honking horns, and busy streets. Thankfully, we are no longer subject to the gaudy statues spitting – or peeing – water into a large, concrete vessel. Instead, waterfalls can be customized to fit any space at surprisingly affordable costs.  It’s a small touch that makes you feel as if you are on vacation in your own backyard.

Grass Patches

You may be surprised by this one, but grass really is one of the best backyard landscaping ideas. We’re not talking about installing sprinklers across your whole yard and spending hundreds of dollars a year to water it. No, we like strategically placed grass patches that add color and texture to a yard. We also love a small grass spot because it gives you a place to have a nice picnic or watch an outdoor movie with family and friends.

Movie Theaters

This one has us excited. Now that you have your seating figured out, your fireplace built, and your grass installed.  it’s time to invite everyone over for an outdoor movie. DIYers get your tools ready because for a few bucks you can build your own movie screen. Or, for the less hammer-happy, hang a painter’s canvas on the side of your house and project the movie there. We can think of no better way that to take full advantage of your beautiful lawn and the cool weather.

What do you want to do to your backyard? It’s surprising how little it costs to add a few touches to your outdoor space. Even more surprising is how much time you’ll want to spend in your backyard once you capitalize on some of these backyard landscaping ideas.
